I love when a book hooks me from the very beginning, and this one did just that. I loved it! I just wanted to read it and nothing else. The writing was fantastic. I felt the characters so intensely. The story was unique for me. When you've read as much as I have that's a very refreshing thing. This was my first Jewel. E. Ann book and I've already downloaded more.

I'm in love, angry, happy, sad, confused, angry again...
I don't know what to think.
This is a roller coaster.

Unfortunately I couldn’t finish the book. I couldn’t get into it. I’m not sure why.

I really loved this book! Had no idea what it was about but have had several books from this author on my TBR. So glad I started with this one. I loved every single thing about Ronin Alexander, his character was written perfectly and I could see why Evie would fall so hard for him. Together they made an amazing couple. I will say that Lila and Graham had my spidey senses tingling because something just didn't sit well with me and how they treated Evie.
I kept going back to the prologue wondering how on earth that was going to play into the story. And wow!! So unexpected but done perfectly. Cannot wait to finish this story with book 2

Ooof. <- I wish that could be it. The whole review.

What went well - Jewel E Ann writes in a way that is very readable, and (when she desires to do so) writes characters that are very likable. I also was intrigued by the "magical realism" aspect of the story.

However, beyond that I don't have many nice things to say about this duet. For me, in any book classed as romance, there is this invisible line that needs to be toed to avoid becoming irredeemable. Lies that shouldn't be told, secrets that shouldn't be kept. Any relationship, real or fictitious can only take so much battering before there is more pain in staying together than apart. It became apparent to me relatively early in the duet that things were going to occur in this story there was no coming back from. Were things as bad as I feared? In someways, no. In other ways things were much worse.

At the end of the day I cannot suspend my disbelief that the events this book culminated in could end in smiles and laughs and I love you. Especially in the span of just like 3% of a story. 97% pain and misery and hurt and betrayal and 3% oh it'll all be okay if you kiss me and say you love me. Forget the body count.

This book did not do it for me. At all.

(x-posting this review with the second in the duet)

Picked this one up after I read a review. I HAD NO IDEA!!! Truly love where the story is going, all the emotions of the story seem to fit right, and there is just enough tension throughout that you want to keep reading as long as possible.

I’m speechless and heartbreak.
I’ve finished the book a few days ago but couldn’t bring myself to write a review.
It’s a story full of feelings and emotions. Everything you’ve ever felt in your life, you’re going to feel with this book in a few hours.
And I mean EVERYTHING. Happiness, love, family and friendship, humour and great dialogue and inner dialogue but also sadness, heartbreak and fear.
It’s like a punch in your heart but it gives more awareness that everything can change in a second.
I need the second book to ugly cry of happiness.
