I started this book with mixed feelings. It started out feeling like it was using the same formula as Men at Arms. However, I did feel it eventually started to pick up and get a little more interesting. I do enjoy the mystery/who done it aspect of the night watch books and so overall did enjoy it largely due to this being more of a mystery book. I did really enjoy the resolution of this book and did find it a lot more interesting than Men at Arms.

I didn’t feel there was as much focus on the humor/satire for this book, which was unfortunate, though I don’t feel it ruined my enjoyment of this book. The only other thing I didn’t like was there is a character that struggled with something internally throughout Men at Arms that I felt was still struggling with those same things in this book. There hasn’t been any resolution yet for that character, but I feel there hasn’t even been any progress and I am hoping to see that in their next appearance we finally see resolution of that internal conflict.

One of the more straightforward Discworld novels, but no weaker for it. A strong, fun mystery, with some great new characters added to the universe. My only qualm is I found some of the side plots not as engaging as in other Discworld novels, but they all tie together nicely. If you've never read a Discworld novel... well, I don't think would be the best starting point, I think it shines best once you have some basic familiarity, but maybe as a third or fourth novel it's a strong pick. Plus, it's the first book to examine the idea of Dwarfen gender, and to have a major fantasy author not just be Not Shitty about this sort of thing, but actively provide strong representation through strong characters is very refreshing.

The best City Watch novel yet, and probably my favourite book so far in the Discworld. With his unusual and refreshing approach to fantasy, Terry Pratchett manages to balance quirky humour with dark reality. Asking questions about what makes us human, this book guarantees a great read.
