This book is incredible. Well written and highlights so much of what America is and what probably would happen if aliens did come to earth. It tackles PTSD, panic attacks, and depression incredibly and really has the reader understand what it is like to feel those mental health issues. The audiobook narrators did an amazing job bringing these characters to life.

It’s a dark middle chapter that has a ton of interesting ideas to grapple with. I do think that the ideas sometimes overwhelmed the actual narrative here, and that can be tough when the actual narrative is emotionally so brutal. I found it impressive. I hate to sound like a weenie here, but I was hoping for some brief catharsis or at least fleeting joy for Cora, and this was pretty miserable. Luckily, I like the ideas at play and the prose is really strong, so I devoured this regardless. Much like the last book, it leaves off at a fascinating place for the next book - I’m hoping that the increasing amount of story threads resolves into a gorgeous web instead of a mess. It’s still fascinating and I’m enjoying the series - but this distressing middle installment puts a lot of pressure on the finale to resolve things.

This book isn't really for the faint of heart, and I wasn't sure if I liked the two-character-perspectives thing because I had an immediate hate-on for Kaveh. He did eventually grow on me.
As someone who has gone through
somebody extremely close to me dying
, the end of this book is very raw and painful, even though I saw it coming.
The portrayal of mental illness and post traumatic stress by Lindsay Ellis is meaningfully done, and well executed. It puts to words just how awful that kind of experience can be while you're going through it without the right help. I truly felt for Cora. My heart broke for her.
I have a lot of love for this series so far and I'm looking forward to reading book three after being eviscerated by book two.
