I'm mad at myself for not reading this sooner! This was such a beautiful book. While the domestic abuse and SA scenes were hard to listen to, they were handled so well.

I really enjoyed the first half of this book. I was quickly pulled into the romance between Iris and August, and thought that Ryan's portrayal of Iris' abusive relationship did a strong job of capturing the isolation, control, and violence. However, I found the on-page violence to be too much at times, and felt that Ryan could've still conveyed the seriousness, fear, and lack of power Iris experienced without putting so much on page.

The second half also took a dip for me; I understand Ryan needed to transition Iris out of the abusive relationship, but found it was the least realistic part of the book. I also found the shift in Iris and August's relationship when Iris is available to be sudden and focused more on connecting through sex than anything else. The ending dropped my review quite a bit; again, there are some realistic elements but it felt overly dramatic and used a way to cleanly tie up some of the loose ends.

Overall, I loved Ryan's writing; some elements were just not for me, but I look forward to reading her next.

This book was way too slow paced for me.
Some repetitive thoughts from both main characters
The romance in this novel is not very exciting.
It seems like the main characters just lust after each other.
didn’t feel connection between main characters.
The author did a good job at showing the stages of domestic violence and how the system fails woman

It wasn’t bad but I didn’t see the authors note before reading and there was a lot of on page graphic domestic violence. I had no idea what I was getting into. I think the story could have been told without so much on page violence.

This was a really rough read and I'm not sure I'd recommend it to everyone. Major trigger warnings for domestic violence, rape, abuse, imprisonment and child endangerment. I was in a bad place myself reading part of this book, but had to finish it to make sure the heroine got through to the other side.

That said, the writing is amazing and quotable. The author obviously did extensive research because the circumstances and emotions and decisions ring true. If you are in a dangerous situation at home, call the Domestic Abuse Hotline at 800-799-SAFE (7233).
