Read my book review of Anne Bishop’s Heir to the Shadows by Anne Bishop. This is a dark fantasy and the second book in the Black Jewels series.

This one was almost as good as the first one, and that one was wonderful. I never ever do this...three in a row by the same author...but I went and bought the third one right away. (And since it's Kindle, I do mean *right away*.)

In this second installment we finally get more on the family and friends (the First circle) plus Jaenelle finally starts to hone her claws....which she will need in the "near" future. I love the character development we get here especially at the reunion scene. Again, this whole series hovers at the top of my favorites list but I tend to like a dose of gritty, bloody truth in my fantasies.

The story seemed to meander, and much of what alluded to, I wish had been included. But the climax was outstanding, the humor apt, and I loved the world Anne Bishop built.
