"When we create, it is not to prove, but to share."

5 stars. It is rare that a story that tells you the ending in the first pages can remain so enthralling that it commands all of your attention, even when you've put it down for a time. Like the samba Peebles introduces in her masterful way with words, the coming-of-age narrative of Dores and Graça is a timeless, memorable performance.

In the whirlwind of early 20th-century Brazil, and later the wartime United States, Dores, the plain, underprivileged, foil to the standout and spoiled Graça, takes us on their journey from the sugarcane plantation to Lapa, Rio de Janeiro, and Los Angeles, buoyed by the power of music and the struggles of friendship in a commercialized world. Peebles crafts an exquisite cultural commentary, paints a historical picture of 1930s-40s Brazil, and asks us to consider our motives - what makes someone selfish, and what makes something truly ours to keep?

Because of the focus on Latin American culture and history, and explorations of queerness through defiance of gender and sexual norms, I especially recommend this novel to fans of Carolina de Robertis and Taylor Jenkins Reid.
