Nah. The dialectal/regional expressions were overwhelming--I couldn't understand much of what was said. Other than Ruthie Jean, whom I wanted to survive, there's not much here. Plot makes little sense--I still don't know what is going on, in part because I couldn't understand what anyone says. Dave seems to have encountered a great epiphany but I still have no idea what it was. Am a little tired that either Bootsie or Alafair is imperiled in each novel.

I’ll be honest… I don’t even know what happened in this book. It was a mess of characters each with their own problem (racial motivations, mob bosses, military horrors, etc) and the end was unclear. I get it’s part of a series, but I don’t even know what I just read.

The 8th in this series finds Dave Robicheaux dealing with a complicated conspiracy to purchase a piece of land occupied by black families for decades. As he is drawn into the competing corrupt powers seeking to gain control including mafia, old white families, and racist police he ,his family and clete his partner are at risk.
This book was not my favourite in the series so far but the creation of tension and sense of place are well done however for the first time I grew tired of Daves constant fitness routine, descriptions of his sex life with bootsie, and I felt the Vietnam ghosts have been fully explored.

Fabulous, as always. Magical description, a good story, and I love how the subtle paranormal aspects are just added in there as fact.

Years ago, I heard a "Dave Robicheaux" novel on tape, read in the most wonderful, rich, gorgeous Lousiana accent. Now when I read any of these, I can hear it in that voice. And it's delicious.

Good mystery, too. ;)

As always, a fabulous read, filled with allusions to the desperate beauty of South Louisiana.

I see this is #8 in a series; maybe that's my problem. I pretty much read this two times at once (I had to re-read something on nearly every page), and I still don't know what was going on. I have Cadillac Jukebox as well; I don't know yet if I'll attempt it.

He's my favorite author. Read a Burke book and your in a dark theater by yourself surrounded and engulfed by his images. I've read them all but can only do so once every 3-4 months because in the end they are their message about the human condition is not hopeful.
