A Little Life was…….. tough to read. I had a hard time deciding how I felt about the book, so much so that I’m coming to this review about two weeks after finishing. I think what’s so challenging about deciding how I feel about this book is the fact that Yanagihara’s prose is one of a kind. There are several passages in the book that verbalized feelings that I had never before put to words, that were so beautiful they had me tearing up. Unfortunately the main character Jude’s story is just… unbelievable. Truly I had a hard time believing that his life was something that could actually happen to someone in the world. It broke my enjoyment of the book several times and had me feeling that the author was just exemplifying the trope of gay people as vessels of trauma. I could not handle it and had several eye rolls reading this. So, I’m still trying to decide how I feel about this book. I loved parts of it, I hated other parts.

Unrelenting tragedy and heartbreak. I don't think I could ever recommend this to anyone but I also think everyone should find the time to read it. 
It's slow, it trudges, and it hits so hard right in the heart. It's awful. I knew it would be, but I was so compelled to give it the time it deserved. It's simply a modern classic that should never be experienced by anyone.

This is one of the best and worst things I have ever read. I will think of these characters everyday. That being said this book is HEAVY. I would strongly recommend only reading this if you are in a good place mentally. This writer has such a way with words and despite the extremely heavy content of this book there was so much friendship and love in this book.

This book is emotionally so challenging! Nothing short of destructive. I have seen many reaction videos to the book before reading it and even though I have not shed a single tear while reading it, the book still broke me and tore my heart in half in the last third. 
The book begins rather slow and has a lot of descriptive parts in the beginning and middle but that makes the book in total that much better!
I had the feeling, that the book is just like life itself. In the beginneng, in ones youthful years, one thinks that one has all the time in the world. But as one gets older, time begins picking up speed and its over before you even realise it. 

I will definitely reread!

A beautifully written piece of art. I was disappointed by the strong focus on only two of the main characters (justice for Malcolm please) but appreciate that this is the direction chosen by the author. Absolutely phenomenal in every other aspect.

This book shattered my heart in good and bad ways, Willem and Jude were my favorite characters and they didn't deserve what they went through. although this book is extremely sad and heartbreaking I loved it and the character development and the plot. i highly recommend but search up trigger warnings before reading it and don't read it if you're not in a good spot mentally.
