It took me awhile to warm up to Alex and this one is definitely more scientific minded than Verity's but they are different people, so it makes sense. Not my favorite in the series, but definitely a good read.

Loved it! An awesome, entertaining and light read! More please!
There's not much depth to the story or to the characters, but that's also not the point.

This is not a 1-star rating within the context of urban fantasy in general but within the series itself as well as other works by the same author.
The plot resolution was so stupid that I was already quite mad but to cap it all off the reaction and the responses by the MC where so ridiculous that I won't be able to take any of this authors' characters serious for quite some time.
So the majority of the book is ok I guess but the ending is just terrible.

A lot of fun, and I’m glad to meet Alex (and Shelby too). Bonus points for the Jurassic Park reference.

This book, "Half-Off Ragnarok", is the third book in the author's "InCryptid" series.

While the first two books dealt with the oldest of the Price off-spring, Verity, this one follows her brother, Alexander Price, working at the zoo in Columbus, Ohio. Outwardly, one of the keepers working in the reptile house, he's actually working on breeding basilisks and studying a problem he didn't know existed until he arrived in Ohio, why are populations of frogs being replaced with their feathers cousins, frickens.

This book focuses for the most part on reptile cryptids and petrifactors (cryptids that petrify (including both gaze-based and venom-based)). Plus the author throws in a new cryptid that you wished you could find only in obscure pet stores: the church griffin.

By the way, the author provides a taxonomy of creatures at the back of each of her novels (which don't always map to the creatures actually in that specific novel) but she has a "Field Guide" on her website which is excellent and covers all of the cryptids in her universe with drawings: http://seananmcguire.com/fieldguide.php

One of the pleasures of this novel series is the knowledge that the author brings regarding biology and taxonomy. All of the cryptids have a background and scientific name and information about where they fit into the ecosystem.

There are some other things that I loved about the novel including and especially Shelby Tanner which I won't describe because to do so would constitute a spoiler.

Some throw-away lines in the book:

"Let's go commit some senseless acts of science."

"Will you tell me a bedtime equation?" (Obviously Sarah.)

I'm looking foward to the fourth book in the series.
