This was such a cute collection of short stories about young love and discovering who you are—all set against a blackout in New York City.

For being short stories, they were all connected and worked well together; these characters are all unknowingly trying to get to the same block party, which made for a fitting finale. I loved how much we learn about each character even though we don't spend a ton of time with any of them—it was great writing! I loved that NYC felt like its own character; it's always fun when authors do that.

Overall, these were sweet stories celebrating young Black love that made my heart happy and hopeful. Definitely recommend if you enjoy YA romance or if you just need a lighthearted pick-me-up book.

“But all at once I decide that you can’t be brave unless you’re at least a little scared.”

This was so cute. It was a super quick and cute summer read. I loved the NYC setting. I loved the whole concept of a blackout out happening. I loved all the interconnected stories. The representation in this was amazing, but even aside from that the stories were great. I just love how each author brought their own unique writing style and different stories to this book. I did find myself more interested in some stories than others, but that’s bound to happen. I think my favorite was Mask Off by Nic Stone. Tremaine and JJ were just really cute. Overall, I really liked the vibes of this book. It was the whole idea that anything could happen with all these young characters in a once in a lifetime event, but it also touched on some deep topics which I really liked. I just wish we had more time with these characters.

Blackout is a collection of YA romantic short stories that simply felt good to read. The line up of authors is stellar and it was fun to see them in this format.

The stories all center on Black teen love during the New York City heatwave and blackout. They stand alone as stories and feel cohesive in the way the setting brings them together. It’s YA type romance and captures that young crush feeling balanced with teenagers settling into their own personal identities.

Several relationships are LGBTQ+ inclusive and everything has a charming quality to it. If you’re looking for a quick read that will make you feel good, this is a wonderful pick.

I enjoyed a lot of this book. Even though some of the writing styles disagreed with me, that was bound to happen with a short story collection. But that bus story is the bane of my existence. It was so dreadful and I don’t even know how it tied into the story.

sooo good omg, like it made me so happy to read. it’s good for when you want a book that doesn’t take too much brain power to enjoy, but also requires a little reflection to fully and truly understand. i loved all the different tropes that were used in the series of stories and enjoyed how all the characters were somehow intertwined with one another. it definitely had some moments that were so good i could scream! overall, amazing read and super satisfying to read.
