It had some good twists and a good story but I felt it dragged on in some parts and was hard to keep focus

Only just got through the first chapter and it’s far too graphic for me. Very graphic torture/murder (and I’m not normally very squeamish but this is too much)

This one took me a little longer to get into than the author's other books, but in the end I couldn't put it down. Lots of twists that I didn't see coming, and one big one that I did. The interweaving of a present mystery with a past mystery was very well done. Lots of trigger warnings and lots of violence and language, but if you're a Karin Slaughter fan, you know that's what's coming. If you're not already a fan, start with the Will Trent series (it's Slaughter's best work), or with Pieces of Her, neither of which are very like the TV shows they inspired. (The books are infinitely better!)

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Not my typical genre, I often shy away from crime/mystery novels as I don’t always enjoy the writing enough, but this definitely surprised me! I listened to the audiobook rather than reading a physical copy, and I think that it was read in a very captivating way as well. I was struggling a little to follow what was happening in the beginning, with a flashback scene opening the book, and then jumping 28 years later, but I was quite quickly immersed in the story. Many layers of complexity throughout. The development of the characters throughout the story was fantastic, and the slowly unfurling mystery definitely surprised me at times. I was sucker punched by the adjacent plot about three quarters of the way through, absolutely gut wrenching and took me by surprise! There’s lots to unpack here, and I might come back and write something a bit more cohesive about my thoughts. Overall very very enjoyable, even for non-mystery/ crime readers like me. Please check CW and TW, there’s quite a bit here that many may find upsetting.

Another complex, meticulous, layered mystery from Slaughter. Though her books can be a little "American patriotism propaganda" I've come back to her writing a few times because I know i can rely on her for smart, female centred mysteries that resolve satisfyingly. The storylines form a tapestry of the complicated lives and intertwined lives in small town America. This was no different. Though I'd hesitate to recommend it widely, it was a compelling read that kept me guessing, with twists around every corner.

This book felt so difficult to rate as there is just so much to process whilst reading. A much heavier book than I had initially thought and very much an ‘everything-but-the-kitchen-sink’ type story so definitively check the content warnings if you’re looking to read.

Karin has done a fantastic job at setting the darkness and raw emotions throughout the story with some fantastic characters. The relationship dynamic between the sisters Charlie & Sam and how we can see them develop as people from their respective trauma.

There was a lot to unpack throughout the story which did make it tricky at times to follow as an audio book. I think where the book falls slightly short, is that by trying to balance so many heavy themes
E.g. School Shootings, Rape, Murder, miscarriages and Suicide
that it becomes over saturated and leaves a sense of numbness to some of the shock value these moments perhaps were meant to deliver. Ben

Whilst I did enjoy this book in various ways, I am not sure I’d read this again just for how heavy the book was but will be looking to listen to the shorter prequel as I did enjoy the writing style.
