Stories have no beginning and no end, only doors through which one may enter them. A story is an endless labyrinth of words, images and spirits, conjured up to show us the invisible truth about ourselves.
.

When I first started this series, I binged read the first three books (I unfortunately did not write reviews back then). I was consumed in this world, it’s mysteries, the flawed characters and the romanticism of it all. When it came to the fourth book, I hit a slump and put it aside for like a year. The audiobook remained unfinished and with fond memories of how much I loved the first three, I finally decided to pick it up again. What a masterful ending to one of my favourite series.

I felt like I was watching Endgame. That thrill anticipation as all the plot points come together to deliver a powerful ending as you watch your favourite characters interact and work together. I cried a lot reading this. The characters have gone through so much throughout the four books and my heart broke each time they suffered or learned a truth that broke them. This has cemented the series as one of my absolute favourites and I cannot wait to read Carlos Ruiz Zafón’s other books.

Tell our stories to the world, and never forget that we exist so long as someone remembers us.

Rest In Peace, Carlos Ruiz Zafón.

I saw the headline that Zafón had passed just before I was to finish this final installment in the Cemetery of Forgotten Books trilogy.

Your talents will be missed, Carlos. Thank you for giving us one of the greatest book series. You have been immortalized through these pages, the same way your characters immortalize themselves in their stories.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As for the book, I could not have asked for a better final installment for this series. I enjoyed the strong female lead in this book very much, and appreciated the ways in which our favorite characters were woven throughout, even though it took awhile for them to become more prominent in the story. The stories all felt very well balanced with each other.

I appreciate that this book brings closure to nearly every plot and subplot in the series, that I can recall at least (as there are several subplots as you drive deeper into the series). A great balance of happy endings, tragedies, and bittersweet moments.

At over 800 pages (the longest in the series), I was initially worried about the pace of the book. With how packed it is with the various plots, I felt engaged the whole time, and actually preferred this length to the much shorter prequel, The Prisoner of Heaven, which felt much too brief.

True to my reviews of the previous books, I continue to believe that reading the books in order of release is the best way to read them. The Prisoner of Heaven and this 4th book simply wouldn't be as satisfying without having read The Shadow of the Wind and The Angel's Game. My only exception to this view is that I believe either of the first 2 books could be read first, since The Angel's Game is a prequel to The Shadow of the Wind.

Finishing this book was bittersweet, as I am sad that this series is over, and that there is no chance of any continuations or spin-off books with Zafón having just passed (much too soon) yesterday.

But I continue to compare the engagement and excitement I experienced with this series to when I read the Harry Potter series as a kid. There is nothing quite like it, and I have a hard time imagining I'll find a series this well-written and captivating for a long time. Needless to say, it has quickly become my favorite book series.

I will miss the characters (especially Fermín) and 1900s Barcelona, but look forward to re-reading these books one day.

Rest in Peace, Carlos Ruiz Zafón, and thank you for sharing these stories with the world.
