3.5
Huh...
I'll get my issues out of the way first and then move on to the good stuff. I appreciate how clearly complex, original and creative this world is. The thing that holds me back from really loving it is that I had so much trouble following anything. I don't need everything about this world spoon-fed to me, (that would remove a lot of the intrigue that I actually did appreciate), but I literally had to go back and read someone's simplified chapter by chapter recap of the events of the story to understand the very basics of what was happening. That may very well be a me thing,--my brain is particularly mush this month--but I know that "I can't keep track of what is going on" is a common remark about this book, so maybe not? Either way it just was kind of a difficult reading experience for me.
But I gave it 3.5 stars because at a certain point (perhaps too far in, but whatever), I did become very invested. I think that can be attributed to how wonderful Gideon and Harrow were as characters. I absolutely love their dynamic. That and, as I said before, the world Tamsyn Muir has created is incredibly fascinating, and once I really started to get into it and understand more of what was happening, I wanted to know more.
So I'm definitely gonna give Harrow the Ninth a shot. I can attribute pretty much all the issues I had with Gideon on it being too big-brain and me being too small-brain. Now that I've stuck it out this far and gotten invested, I'm hoping the rest will be a little easier? We'll have to see. Bottom line is I'm into it now. Locked Tomb stans don't kill me please
