I didn't get as much out of this as I had hoped. There were some recipes that left me thinking it would be cheaper and less time-consuming to just buy the item instead of all of the ingredients. There were a couple I marked to copy later, but nothing grabbed me and made me shout, "Yes! I want to make this NOW!" Also, what's with all the wheat? Has it really become that much of an American staple that we can't cook without it?

These recipes are so fun! I love the idea of making the items to stock a pantry, and this book gave me some good ideas. The recipes are approachable and straightforward.

Such a fun book. Everything in here is useful. I wouldn't mind owning it, actually.

Alana's not only a great cook, she's a fantastic writer. Each little recipe has an opening blurb that's just delightful to read. So is hearing about her family. (Confession: I know her mother, and have met Alana and Joey and they're honestly as fantastic as they sound). The recipes are simple, but may include things you wouldn't normally try: graham crackers, peanut butter cups, pop tarts, sauerkraut, and cream cheese. But you're also buying this book for the enchanting photographs, those stories, and just the idea that yes, you could make your own pop tarts if you really wanted to.

Fast read :). Learned some things. I make a lot of my own things (yogurt, sour cream which isn’t on her list, etc.) on her list. Some things are way too complicated (ketchup and bread) and can be made simpler, but for the most part this is a great book

I liked the cute little stories about the author's family and her simplistic way of looking at things and living. Each of these recipes look do-able and sound healthier than the store-bought ones.

Quite possibly my favorite cookbook of all time. It has already found itself on my Amazon wish-list. Not only did I love having several practical recipes of things I could make at home rather than buy at the store, but I found the author's overall tone to be refreshing. Not once did she get on a high horse about how store bought food is the harbinger of the apocalypse and the destruction of small intestines everywhere. Her matter of a fact attitude recognizes that sometimes, despite how delicious homemade food is, store bought food has to do. Additionally, she points out in the recipe when the store bought version is a cheaper alternative.
Another aspect of the book that I enjoyed were the little stories she told at the start of each recipe. They were just the right tone, not overly sentimental but nostalgic in feeling.
My only minor complaint is that I wish there were more gorgeous color photographs in the book.
