Oof. I've been hanging onto this book for a long time because as I remind myself of what I'm getting into, I needed to mentally prepare myself for it. Even the first little bit I started, and needed to set aside for a few days. It was every bit as gruesome as I anticipated.
The book starts out as just another apocalyptic novel/movie that you’ve seen. Things go to shit when something happens (in this case, a disease that kills more women than men). So, we're looking at a United States where 99% of the population has died and there's barely any women left. What do you think will happen? After slowly tiptoeing through the first little bit, I demolished this in a night where I really, really needed to get proper sleep (I'm doing an overnight flight today) and of course I wasted sleep on this book.
Men are pigs. I had to get up and talk to my husband to remind myself that there's good men and decompress after this book, because there really isn't that much reprieve from all the depression. It's frank, it's realistic. I know in the back of my mind there's shitty people before breakdown of society, it's society that's keeping them in check, but it does give you pause and a certain amount of dread of what may happen.
I'm not sure if this book is particularly different than any other post-apocalyptic book I've read, but it's more of a grim reality for women. No babies that stay alive (Children of Men), a disease that decimates society (Station Eleven, The Walking Dead), shitty life for women (The Handmaid's Tale, except worse in this book I think).

I got totally sucked into this dark post-apocalyptic story of the unnamed midwife surviving by posing as a man while she travels seeking out whatever safety she can.
Many times the brutality of this world made me shudder, but the tenacity of the unnamed midwife had me enthralled. I rarely binge listen to audiobooks, but I had a hard time putting this one down.
Looking forward to the next two installments in this series.

First postapo I've seen that doesn't shy away from sad truth of what would actually happen to women in a postapocalyptic reality.
Heavy TW for sexual assault, pregnancy, pregnancy loss and violence

A gripping, easy read about the worst and best of humanity.
