Another great read from Natasha Lester. I loved this book! I'm now sad that I've read all 5 of her historical fiction books and am going to have to wait for her next one to come out in 2021.

A great story set in a delicious era.
Evie Lockhart, the protagonist, gets a job as a Ziegfeld Girl to fund her way through medical school, I was fascinated by both areas of her life.
A well researched book which gives shocking details about the methods of child birth in the 20s, you very much champion Evie as she fights to be heard in a man's world. I loved hearing about The Ziegfeld Follies, it's an era I'm passionate about... I think the story would have benefited from even more details about the setting.

It was a very well crafted story, if a little predictable but that didn't take away from the quality of the writing.

I enjoyed this book alot and read it in 12 hours. The only reason it got a lower star was because it has less depth then the others.
But overall a good read and a nice love story too

It's really surprising to me that this book can't be found on Kindle or in paperback format here in the U.S.. I could only access this story through audiobook which was really strange for me as I only save audiobooks for driving, not for entire stories. I don't have the patience. So it should say a lot that I lay on my bed for hours at a time just listening to this because it was impossible to put down.

The main character is exactly the way I like them-- strong, capable, determined, and sick of the oppressive system she's grown up in. She wants to be a doctor and she is willing to give up EVERYTHING to be one. And she really has to. She balances working nights as a Follies girl with studying medical school while being belittled in both jobs (one for being a floozy despite the high demand, the other for defying gender/societal roles) and together the author manages to shed light on how women are shamed both physically and mentally until they're pushed into a little box. But this main character spits in the faces of those who are determined to see her fail, she fights and she prevails through all hardships.

I also loved that with this VERY strong feminist novel we have a feminist romantic lead who actually pays attention to Evie's (the main character's) needs for respect and independence. So while there were a ton of truly aggravating male characters, we still were able to see a healthy relationship built on mutual respect throughout the novel.

The medical aspect of this novel was incredibly disturbing as it focused on baby doctors in a male-domineered world. I found myself hoping many times that this novel was exaggerated but it dropped random facts here and there. For instance, 2 out of 3 women who went to a gynecologist went because of obstetric complications (I think is how you phrase that) post-baby. This large number was due to so many doctors having the attitude that women were "like salmon" where they have one baby and then they pass on. Doctors would mutilate women's vaginas beyond repair (while said women were medicated into a stupor) in an attempt to more easily pull the babies out. It was nauseating but it made me more determined to support our main character along the way.

Altogether a fantastic read. I 100% recommend it.

I absolutely loved it! Whenever I opened the book I felt as if I’d been transported into another era, it was definitely the cat’s pajamas! Natasha Lester is such an amazing author, she definitely knows how to capture your attention and makes you wish you really knew the characters. Evie is such a lovely protagonist, I really feel for her. I loved her determination and adored her for always thinking of others, and sacrificing so much in the process.

The plot is beautifully written, a strong, determined woman wanting to make a difference in a time where men dominate most professional fields. I could definitely feel Evie’s frustrations! With a hint of romance and mystery. For most of the book I was so sure I knew who it was, but then I wasn’t so sure anymore.

If Natasha decides to write another book, even if it’s not part of the same universe, I’ll definitely be reading it!

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
