A wide ranging look at the racism black Canadians face today. I really enjoyed the way the book was put together, looking at a different issue or case each month, but also showing the history of similar issues in Canada.

Desmond Cole has opened my eyes to some very uncomfortable truths. This book made me squirm and it made me cry, but I am grateful for its lessons and hope to use them to be a better ally.

I don't think the subject matter lends itself to book form. Cole is a newspaper journalist and this feels like a collection of outdated columns and commentary (because I heard about these incidents when they originally occurred and due to style). Except for the May chapter, which was about lilacs and the writer's mom, and stood in stark contrast to the rest of the book.

I’m so glad that there’s a book that details all the issues of systemic racism and police brutality in Canada. So many people try to act like this is not a problem here, when it so clearly is. I recommend this to any Canadians who want to learn more about the injustices BIPOC face in this country!

This is the book on racism that Canadians need to be reading.

I’m glad that I found a book that talks about race and systemic racism from a Canadian perspective. Read it, take it in, think, and act.
