It might be because it was written in 2005, when the YA genre was in a very different place, but I found this book ineffective in ways that were pretty baffling. For example, the book is told in first-person passages that rotate through the four main characters, except when there is an occasional italicized passage in third person that summarizes what has recently happened. These sections add nothing to the story and are disorienting every time they pop up. The plot itself also leaves a lot to be desired—the major event alluded to on the back cover doesn’t occur until the last fifty pages, and even when it does it carries no more weight than any of the other minor crises that occur throughout the story without cohering into any kind of larger whole. While I appreciated that there was substantive discussion of the books the girls read for their radio slot, these segments are definitely not strong enough to make the book worthwhile.

Actually, I abandoned this book so maybe two stars is harsh. I should have checked the publication date (2005) because it's so out-dated. Terry Wogan still on Radio 2's Breakfast SHow and George Bush Jnr is President of the USA. Nuff said...
