I have read this as part of my quest to read as many banned books as possible this year. This is a sweet story of teen love. However, it is banned in some schools/ classrooms. There's no reason for this. There's nothing overtly sexual about this book. It merely discusses the realization and development of homosexuality by the main character.

This book was a great read! The emotions were raw and real. I loved the characters, and the story was well told.

Such a lovely book. Some scenes I felt were unnecessary and hurt my heart after I’ve gotten to know the characters. I do however understand how many closeted kids would benefit and like it, I sure did even if I’m not closeted. I found myself very fond of the characters and of the book as a whole. Lots of gossip girl vibes.

This is a stunning and incredibly comforting novel; it was revolutionary at the time of its publication and in spite of the palpably 80's setting, it still reads as relevant today. There is a lot of gentleness in the way Garden describes Annie and Liza's relationship and you can tell she intended it as a gift to her own community. Garden seems to care deeply about the wellbeing of her characters and manages to entirely convince the reader to care for them too, with softness and warmth.

A modern-day author who compares, to me, would be Nina LaCour, so if you are someone who enjoys her work and it is reluctant to pick up an LGBT+ classic because you are afraid of how outdated it would be, I could not encourage you enough to pick this book up.
