I wanted to love this book based on the premise but it didn’t happen. The FMC is fat phobic, kills her dog, and spends an incredible amount of time obsessed with a murder that never happened. (The stream of consciousness is both interesting and frustrating.)

Similar to the other Moshfegh book I read recently, I finished mostly unsatisfied with the time spent reading.

This was one of the strangest books I have ever read. The MC’s internal monologue is the majority of the story, so it is interesting to see how she is interpreting the world around her into the story she is spinning. Made me think a lot about growing old, loneliness, and dealing with the world’s demons.

My first go at this book was with the audio version. Really interesting experience but I felt like I increasingly fell off due to just how insane the narrator is. A cool effect to listen to, being she’s peak unreliable narrator and the book is her stream of consciousness. I look forward to reading a physical version to see if that changes my rating.

I didn’t dislike this book but I also didn’t enjoy it. I found it very slow and tedious but liked how some things
unravelled as Vesta spiralled, such as her relationship with Walter
. I get what Otessa Moshfegh was trying to do but idk if she did it in the most effective way. My least favourite of her books that I’ve read so far.
Feeling for poor Charlie.

I really wouldn't recommend this book. I didn't find the story or characters compelling and had to force myself to read it all the way through. It felt as if the author was just using the book as an excuse to be incredibly fatphobic. Such a disappointing read :(

There are other books that write unlikeable characters struggling with mental health issues that subvert their reality so much better and not offensively. In my opinion, this is not one of them.

I am happy someone wrote Vesta's and Magda's story. Maybe it will be your favourite book. It was not mine brand of speculative fiction.

03/13/24 3.5/5 stars. I loved how claustrophobic being in the narrator’s mind felt. The intensity of her stream of consciousness almost made up for the sparse plot but overall it felt like something was missing. Maybe that was an intentional oversight to really connect how deteriorated her mental state was or maybe it really was all for nothing.
