I often find fairy-tale styled short stories feel muddled. A proper fairy tale is difficult to write with the old grace of the style without coming across as ridiculous in a bad way.

I loved the style of this short story, even though I was quickly able to see the ending far before it happened. But I did love the unfolding of the story, the lyrical quality of the pacing of each sentence and the story as a whole, and it was overall wonderful. Now I really do have to read this series.

(The fact that it featured a fox didn't hurt. I am a ridiculous lover of foxes.)

Of all the stories that go with the geisha trilogy this one was my favorite so far!

Spring 2021 (March);
Grishaverse Full Read April/March in preparation for Shadow & Bone TV Series

Always a delight and such a warm wrap-around love. I always madly adore getting to drop into Russian retellings, with their own deep histories and new magical systems. I do love how many references to this specific short story shows up everywhere in the thought process of our main character about another main character in books 2 & 3.

2016;
I loved how the Too-Clever Fox ran for the long swath of itself, making me think a lot, and then having its own surprise flip ending from what you expected (made, perfectly, to chill your blood, and I love that she did not shy away from the graphicness of her choice and how serrated, for lack of a better word, that reveal choice was shown). I love that the ending after the twist was unexpected, but sweet as well.

somewhere between between 3 and 4 stars

"It's always the same trap."...."The trap is loneliness, and none of us escapes it. Not even me."
I love folktales and lore so much.

A charming little fable about a clever little fox. I loved the way Bardugo fleshed out a whole word in such few pages, not to mention the wonderful characters. Koja wormed his way into my heart easily. And Bardugo's flair for witty and funny dialogue shines through again. A nice read indeed.

Short story / folk tale about a clever fox, as referenced in Siege and Storm. Not as good as The Witch of Duva, but pretty cute.
