I was so, so excited for this collection and when it arrived, I devoured it in one sitting. I found it disappointing as the best poems, in my opinion, were ones I had heard countless times before after pinning over them on her YouTube page. The other poems simply didn’t compare to the ones she had already shared.

by winning i mean i am not one of the boys but i am the next best thing. by the next best thing i mean i am a girl and i am drunk.

My second Button Poetry! Absolutely adored The Autocross and Backpedal, but many of the others fell a little flat for me. Gatwood has biting insights and undeniable raw talent, but her writing is muddled by the same pitfalls of contemporary poetry which drag down so many others. For better or for worse, this feels very true to the feminism of the mid 2010s

After watching 'Alternate Universe in Which I am Unfazed by the Men Who Do Not Love Me,' I was keen to hear more of her work. She has an incredible unique style in which she brings her stories to life through her poetry. I particularly loved 'Ode to my Bitchface,' 'The Scholar,''Jordan Convinced me that Pads are Disgusting,' 'Like Us,' 'The Only Thing I Brought From America,' and 'Backpedal.' If you love reading poetry and listening to it, I suggest you give it a read, and look for her work on YouTube where you can find her stuff on Button Poetry.

One more thing
when they call you a bitch, say thank you.
say thank you, very much.

i had never heard of olivia gatwood until a friend linked me to some of her performances on youtube. two of my favorite readings there - alternate universe and ode to my bitch face - are still my favorites after going through this collection in print form. olivia's poems on sexism, in particular, are beautiful and powerful; along with the 2 mentioned above, i also really liked manic pixie dream girl says. some of these pieces are a little more forgettable, but alternate universe and ode to my bitch face have easily slid into my favorite poems of all time. if you've never seen olivia's live performances of those two, i highly highly suggest it!!
