Sue Monk Kidd: I forgive the awfulness of The Mermaid Chair; this is a wonderful book!

An inspiring novel loosely based on historical events. It's about two sisters who discover their purpose in life to speak against slavery. Being raised in Charleston, their feelings are not received well among their family and their city. The narration is done by Sarah (the older sister), and a slave girl, Handful, who was given to her for her 11th birthday. Throughout the novel, you are able to watch both of them grow into women and grow as friends.

A 4 1/2 star book for me. An incredibly well written and moving story based on real people and events. Highly recommended.
