Most interesting was that Ellison managed to make me feel sorry for the torture machine by the end too. He writes "the machine hated us as no sentient creature had ever hated before". Horrific, to think that with AI, we have as much opportunity to create new levels of suffering as of ease. 

Extremely visceral descriptions of pain, fear, awfulness too. Incredible how much of an impression of unending torment it conveys despite being a half-hour read at most.

Interesting take on AI, especially given the time the short story was originally released. Very grim and bleak, the whole story is filled with a sense of hopelessness and despair through and through. Very enjoyable sci-fi/horror type of thing! Was a bit upset that it was so short but that makes it all the more impactful.

This is properly terrifying and gross, but lacks depth of any kind and the concept has been done better by other authors, and with less racism, sexism, and homophobia.

Super messed up, but the plot concept is still one of the most intriguing things I’ve ever read.

This story is a hard read in general. It may well be one of the bleakest things I have ever read. The video game adaptation is worse. However, i truly believe if you are able to stomach the sensitive content, this book is definitely worth giving a chance.
