This was an uncomfortable read.

As an LGBTQ-identifying person, reading about hate crimes is unpleasant at best. Living only 4 hours from Laramie and knowing the opinions of my neighbors made this experience even harder.

That speaks a great deal to how hard the writer and cast worked on transparency and vulnerability while conducting the interviews and putting together the script.

The Laramie Project was published two years after Shepard’s murder, and the newness of his death is raw thing in the script. Shepard himself haunts the pages and the reactions to his death force a mirror upon Laramie and upon the audience. How “open-minded” are you? In what ways were we all responsible for Shepard’s death?

I hope that Shepard’s death haunts us all for a long time to come, and causes audiences everywhere to reflect on hidden prejudices.

I think this fell short of a five-star read for me, because I haven’t seen this play in person. I will definitely try to see this play in the future, if it’s nearby.

A book club selection. I saw this on stage a few years ago, and of course I'm familiar with the story. But reading it had a surprisingly big effect on me. I literally got chills. I'm not sure I even have words. It took me right back to Montana (and also makes me glad I don't live there anymore, frankly).

Very interesting way of writing and performing a play. I will definitely want to watch it as I feel that is going to be the best way to experience it.
