Simply put, I could not put down this (audio)book. I thought this was by far Carr's best story as it perfectly merged military fiction with horror/thriller.

I appreciated the confidence Carr demonstrated in veering outside of the safe guardrails of hardcore mil-fic and his story really benefited from him doing so. I thought the most dangerous game element was extremely interesting and something I did not expect in this story. I also enjoyed the unique operations and scenery from the Montana ranch to the Russian island bunker.

I'm glad I revisited the series!

I was expecting the “The Most Dangerous Game” section of this book to be longer and more faithful to the classic short story. At no point do any of the good guy SEALs actually get hunted in any detail. I expected more and was sorely disappointed.

Much like the last book, there was only one cartoonishly evil bad guy tortured to death, and the protagonist was only in one play-by-play knife fight ending in him gutting some goon like a fish. Four or more (evil) dogs working for the Russians did I suppose get creatively killed in hand to paw combat, but if this guy is trying to keep my interest he’s going to have to kick it up a notch.

I did enjoy the part where a billionaire former Montana senator made a ton of money in oil after leaving office by leveraging the relationships he made in Washington and giving generously to both parties. I vaguely remember someone in one of the earlier books doing more or less exactly that and it being part of their characterization as the vilest scum to ever walk the earth, but it’s much easier to see both sides when someone does these things to buy cool stuff like cabins in the woods and badass vintage Land Rovers.

I also loved the Victorian flair added by calling Africa “the dark continent” more often than not. Next book I’m expecting a cast of villains from Cathay and a kangaroo hunt in the sunburnt country.

Better than the second book in the series. About on par with the first book. Thoroughly exciting. Loved it.

This book is significantly better than book 2 in the series. Overall there are some parts where it falls flat and contains some plotholes, but for the most part, this book is much more "in-line" with what I expect from the series.

It was nice being able to get more backstory on Rafe, but there could have been more emphasis on that. He still does not feel fully "fleshed-out" as a character. But maybe that will change as the series continues.

One plot point that I hated:
SpoilerI could not stand the Katie/Reece love story. Luckily, it was not super significant. It just read in a very stereotypical fashion. I enjoyed the first book because it did not force this relationship on the characters, but it felt as if it was going to happen at some point.

Unreal. All 3 acts had me on the edge. Flat out didn’t realize it was the 3rd book in the series when I bought it, but Carr does a great job getting you up to speed. Can not wait to get my hands on the first two before the fourth comes out this year.
