A WWII-era woman who intercepts coded radio transmissions accidentally hears a transmission from 2023 and must use a glitch in time to save a Naval ship in the future.
I listened to this on New Year’s Eve because I wanted something short to hit my end of year reading goal, and it blew me away so much it became my favorite read of December. I hadn’t read any Kate Quinn before this but I cannot wait to read all her full length novels now.
If you want a quick standalone read and don’t mind crying (I started sobbing 20 minutes in and didn’t stop) I beg you to check this one out!
CW: War; death

Nice little addition / companion to The Rose Code.

While I don’t know that it did a ton for me, it was a story with two characters that I enjoyed reading about, albeit only for 50 some pages. (Also worth noting that this has a fantastical element to it, so if you're looking for straight historical fiction, that's not what this is)
Quick note that I also downloaded the Audible version and I really liked the narration, so if you’re looking for a short audiobook while you knock out some chores, this would be a perfect pick!

Oh. My. Gawwwwwwd! The way I bawled reading this!
"They'd already been on borrowed time, Lily thought. Not even borrowed time - slipped time. Someone had slipped a little of his time into her pocket, and she didn't know how much more of it they had left."
Ordinarily, I struggle to get emotionally invested in short stories - but that was not the case with Signal Moon. This is such a touching story that will make you both smile and weep. After reading this, I am definitely interested in learning more about the Wrens of WWII, too.
Highly recommend!

Who knew a story that’s only 57 pages could make me feel so much? This made me cry! I loved it.

This was a great short story. I loved how the code-breaking from The Rose Code meshed with the time warp of 2023. It was great to see this author step out of her historical novel box (but not too far) into science fiction.

A clever novella of a radio signal that crosses eighty years between 1943 and 2023, this has two signal technicians, one a Brit in Yorkshire searching for German transmissions in WWII and the other a radio tech in the US Navy, talking to each other across time. Of course their superiors wouldn’t believe it so they have to keep quiet and do what they can to save their countries in a time of war.
