I wasn't sure how I'd rate this book until I got to the beautiful final chapter and conclusion. McCaulley writes of his family's struggles in such a tender way. It also touches on faith and being Black in America.

A beautifully written memoir of Blackness in the American South and the societal factors that fail to support and actively oppress Black people, through the lens of a nuanced personal experience. The author writes with great care and insight in his reflections.
