“If we're all a mix of good and bad then there's always a chance the good might emerge victorious in the end if we give God enough time to do His work. Patience with broken people and broken things is a manifestation of trust in God."

Esau McCaulley expertly recounts his family story going back several generations, telling it in the same way one might tell a fictional narrative. But, of course, these events are real, which made them so much more meaningful to read about. I may not be the type of person who would resonate with this memoir, but it was still a hopeful and beautiful story to hear. My biggest takeaway from McCaulley's story is that we live in a broken world, while at the same time doing the breaking ourselves. We may be victims, but we are also assailants. McCaulley's passion for God and his grasp of grace and forgiveness encouraged me. I highly recommend, especially to members of the Black community who may deeply connect with this memoir.
