A powerful, emotional look at the lives of the Logan family: a Black family in rural 1930s Mississippi. The story is told from the point of view of Cassie Logan, a 9 year old girl who balks against the unfairness they face and who struggles, often unsuccessfully, to hold her tongue. She tells it like it is, even when it gets her into trouble. (She's amazing!)

The author doesn't flinch from the brutal reality of the racist white folks in the area. My heart was racing at one point, I was so worried about the safety of the Logans. The white people were so awful. It's a shame how much that hasn't changed in 90 years.

This is a middle grade book that a person of any age would benefit from reading. I listened to the audio, and I thought Lynne Thigpen did a marvelous job of narrating.
