This was such a fun historical fantasy! I love the setting as well as the magic incorporated into Julius Caesar. This definitely had a bit of a Percy Jackson vibe. I've been wanting to read some more middle grade historical fantasy and this is a great one.

This book had a slow start for me. I've always been intrigued by Roman history though so I kept reading. The main character is a teenage boy who only knows the mines he worked in as a slave. Through a series of events, that are a mix of his own doing and the results of others, he learns more about his families history and discovers that he is more than just a runaway slave. Jennifer Nielsen is a compelling author, because once I committed myself to finishing I got through it quite quickly. I am ready to start the 2nd one and see where Nic ends up.

This was recommended to me by a sixth grade class, and I think anyone who enjoys middle grade fantasy will enjoy this book. I am just not really one of those people.

I really like these characters. The end reveals will definitely make the next book in the series much anticipated.
