Mostly just feeling "meh" about it. I understand why it was a classic, and I appreciate the story the book was telling, but it is not necessarily one I would read again. Read content warnings before reading!

This is the first book that I’ve ever read that’s given me such a visceral reaction to its contents. Do not take the TWs lightly.

I absolutely adore Morrison’s way of writing and will be reading her other novels when I can get my hands on them.

Have reread a few times throughout the years, a fantastic and profound read that I cannot say I enjoyed because it's too dark and sad

Oh my god. This is my first Toni Morrison novel and I’m glad. The style was very diff than expected it felt like acts in a play to me or something but I really like it. Poor lil girl 🥺

I passed on this book during my high school curriculum out of fear my white male teacher would ruin the text for me. I'm very glad that I held off and got to experience this book on my own. Reading the afterword, I realized that this book is meant to change the behavior of the above all. I hope to implement what I've Learned by giving more of my love and attention to those that society has deemed unworthy of it.

This book is hard for me to rate. On one hand, I love Toni Morrison’s writing. It’s beautiful and poetic. I felt a connection to the Pecola’s longing for blue eyes, because I wished for the same when I was a child. The inferiority complex resulting from tying beauty to western standards - blond hair, blue eyes, pale skin - resonated with me and my own struggles with self-esteem growing up in a white-dominated society. However, I cannot look past the characterization of Soaphead Church,
particularly the implication that his pedophilia was the result of being a closeted homosexual.
