Toni Morrison’s writing style is stunning — poetic and raw in the best way. But some parts were really tough to read, not because of the writing, but because they hit hard emotionally. That’s the point of this book though: it’s meant to challenge and confront you with the ugliness of external-turned-internal racism, classism and how societal standards influence self-worth.

This story will stick with me for a long time, as it forces the reader to reflect themselves in many ways. I had to reread the prologue (and the added note from Alice Hasters in the german edition) multiple times to really let the importance and significance of the book sink in.
If you’re planning to read this book, PLEASE make sure you READ THE TRIGGER WARNINGS before reading!!!

(racial trauma, graphic sexual abuse, incest, animal killing, alcoholism, …)

this was such a hard book to read because no i DONOT want to know what the child molester was thinking while raping a child. j dont want to know his life story. i dont want to know how hard he had it. i dont want to know what disgusting things he collects. i dont want to know i dont i dont i dont. maybe the whole point of it went above my head but i have never felt such disgust and such pure rage at anything in my entire life. i read those parts SO FAST like reading two words and skipping the next 30 to see if its over. other than that, i love morrisons style of writing, it feels like a dream. feels like poetry.

This was the first Toni Morrison book I ever read, in high school on my own, before I really had any idea who she even was. Re-reading this now with a much better understanding of how to analyze literature and stuff, this book means even more to me now. It made a huge impression on me before, but now I can appreciate the beauty of the language and how Morrison switches the narrative into the thoughts of the characters (of course i can’t remember the name of this rn tho) but the writing just blew me away for this being her first book. Also, the commentary about what is beautiful… it’s just heartbreaking to me that this book is still so relevant now, 50 years later.
If you like audiobooks, I think it’s definitely worth listening to Morrison read this one. I’m also partial to it because I love her speaking voice. I think i could listen to her all day long

I wasn’t feeling it because the narration style is really confusing and at times annoying. I looked up reviews to see if it could help inspire me to like it and a bunch of people talked about how graphic some sexual assault scenes are later in the book and I decided that wasn’t for me

Toni Morrison’s books always make me so incredibly uncomfortable in the most important way.
