I feel like an asshole as I say this. I suppose I am. I remember reading Morrison before in college and loving and appreciating her. I just could not with this book. I really do not enjoy novels that are deliberately hard to read. (I only understood Claudia's POV.)
I also just really can't be okay with the idea, even if it's a child's, that a father raping his daughter is okay because he loved her.
Yeah, no. I guess I don't get it, and I should have someone explain this one to me. But I don't know that I want to try to read this one again and put in that effort.

“All of our waste which we dumped on her and which she absorbed. And all of us——all who knew her——felt so wholesome after we cleaned ourselves on her. We were so beautiful when we stood astride her ugliness. Her simplicity decorated us, her guilt sanctified is, her pain made us glow with health, her awkwardness made us think we had a sense of humor. Her inarticulateness made us believe we were eloquent. Her poverty kept us generous. Even her waking dreams we used——to silence our own nightmares. And she let us, thereby deserved our contempt. We honed our egos on her, padded our characters with her frailty, and yawned in the fantasy of our strength.” pg. 205

The language in this book is so wonderful. Each word tumbles into the next—a pace that I occasionally wanted to slam the brakes on due to the perverse and horrific things the words depicted. But the words tumbled on, slipping and sliding and settling in my brain. It’s odd, because they seemed comfortable at first, but quickly became restless as Morrison’s words stayed in my brain long after I’d put down the book.
