I have to say this book was just ok. Nothing to get excited about.I think maybe I am too old to really enjoy this book but maybe teens would enjoy this one more .

I will not read the next book in this series.

I really like the premise of the book. The world she built is really interesting. But that lead character is SUPER obnoxious. The supporting characters are great and were the only reason I read until the end.

Kind of interesting read. Didn't really care for the romance aspect. In fact I was kind of annoyed with the main character for wanting a romance thing. Like girl you should be worrying about your life not breaking people up. The more I think about her the more agitated I get.

The Guardians themselves weren't bad but when it came to the main character I have to confess, I was kind of rooting for the bad guys. The storyline had potential but the writing wasn't great and the dialog (especially whenever the main character, Emmy spoke) was terrible. It was difficult to image a love story between the First Guardian (Marcus) and her. I spent most of my time rolling my eyes or shaking my head during this book. With that being said, the storyline itself was somewhat interesting but unless I decide to continue with the series I will never know what happens with it because the story just cuts off and you will have to read the next book in order to find out the rest. I guess you could call it a cliff hanger, but really it just felt unfinished. Overall, I would say this book was just "ok". And I especially, wouldn't recommend listening to the audio version...the female narrator's voice and way of reading made Emmy even more annoying than she already was.

I'm sorry, I don't know how this book (/series) has so many high reviews. Did people read the same book I did?

Again - this was a selection from [b:The Paranormal 13|23387007|The Paranormal 13|C.J. Archer|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1413552098s/23387007.jpg|42945188], a free collection I picked up on Kindle. I'm mad I paid nothing for it, it wasn't even worth that. The only good thing about this book was a quip about Donald Trump.

I expect some sort of roughness to these kindle freebies, good editing is not cheap, but reading this felt like I was reading a rough draft. This line of dialogue for instance:
"Hey, can we get eight Gum Snaps, please, two Ice, two Blinks and two No See."
2+2+2 = 8. WHAAAAAAT. Also note character Ameana, whose nickname of Meana was caught masquerading as both Mina and Mena at different times in the novel. Sometimes I feel like I'm nitpicking when I bring up editing errors, but these were errors that were glaringly obvious to me as a reader and pulled me out of the story - errors that an author should have caught on a proof read.

Let's talk about dialogue next. Dialogue tags were a disaster. There were pages of back and forth dialogue with so few tags that I had to keep refreshing myself on who was speaking. A character would speak twice in a row, throwing off the back and forth flow of the dialogue. There was actually an instance where two speakers spoke in the same paragraph without any indication that the speaker had changed.

I can't even talk about the "romance" in this book. Let me just present this blip of dialogue:
Him: I want you back.
Her: You want to be with me?
Him: Yes.
Her: What about her?
Him: I'm not leaving her.
Say what now? Keeping track of who was with, or trying to get with, who was like watching a season of Bachelor in Paradise.

Honestly, the whole thing was just a bad train wreck. The action scenes were muddled, and the world building scenes were info dumps. The main characters were crappy people. The 15-year old heroine reinforces that there's a beauty standard that she doesn't meet. The plot was thin and not very interesting. I don't often give 1 star ratings, but this book was just plain awful.

"The Girl" by Lola St. Vil, the first book in the Guardians series, unfortunately falls short of expectations, warranting a 1-star rating. While the concept of a teenage girl discovering her special powers and being thrust into a world of supernatural beings and prophecies holds promise, the execution leaves much to be desired.

One of the notable shortcomings of the book lies in its execution. The plot feels disjointed and fails to offer a cohesive and engaging storyline. The world-building lacks depth, leaving readers with unanswered questions and a sense of detachment. Additionally, the character development is lacking, with inconsistent actions and motivations that make it challenging to connect with the protagonists.

Furthermore, the writing style is underwhelming, featuring awkward dialogue and weak descriptive prose. The pacing is uneven, resulting in a narrative that feels rushed and dragged out at different intervals. Regrettably, the book fails to evoke a sense of tension or excitement, making it difficult for readers to stay fully engaged.

Overall, "The Girl" by Lola St. Vil is a book that didn't live up to its potential. While there may be aspects that some readers could find enjoyable, such as the concept, the weak execution hinders the overall reading experience. With underdeveloped world-building, inconsistent characterizations, and subpar writing, it's difficult to recommend this book when there are other young adult fantasy novels that handle similar concepts with more finesse and depth.
