I read a lot of dark thrillers and this one made me incredibly uncomfortable. Even though I read the trigger warnings before starting - or maybe I missed some - there were topics that came up that I was not prepared for.

I had to take breaks and keep reminding myself that it is just a book. The subject matter is unsettling and the amount in which Jack tortures Grace both physically, mentally and psychologically as well as his promises for the future involving Grace's family ... It was a lot

Overall it did keep me on edge which is the point and I was impressed with the ending. Definitely worth a read if you are into dark thrillers - but again - read the trigger warnings beforehand.

It was a good read! The book wasn't revolutionary in its topic or villain. It benefits from the author revealing the villain early on as it's predictable. The author made the villain as disturbing (an understatement) as possible. She keeps the reader at the edge of their seat by keeping a fast pace and preventing you from thinking the hero is continuously winning. The fast pace also helps you from feeling bored when the book gets repetitive. The ending is great because even at that moment, the author will have your emotions running.
However, some things didn't make sense to me:
Why would the police not find it odd that Jack created a room that could only be opened from the outside? Why would the police immediately not suspect murder instead of suicide, if he was locked in a room which can only be opened and locked from the outside? Why didn't any of the couple's friends immediately think back to Jack saying Grace had made more paintings only for his eyes that were located elsewhere in the house, once details surfaced of the room being covered in paintings?

Was not a huge fan of this book.  It was actually pretty difficult for me to get through.  Not because of the content being too graphic, but because of how slow paced it was.  However, I’m assuming the slow pace is to force the reader to experience the confinement of the main character alongside her.  All in all, I would say this book was effect, but just not for me.
