Ah, now I remember why I loved this series so much as a teen. What an incredible and utterly devastating story. Everything fits together so nicely in its tragedy and the characters feel just so much more tangible than in the previous volume. It also made me laugh a couple of times, despite the horrors that would follow. What a great book!

The Curse of the Wendigo is a good sequel to The Monstrumologist. This book is split into two parts: Pellinore and Will’s journey to find his friend, and a look into the life of monstrumologists in New York City. The first part reads like a survival tale and it is very enthralling. And the second part gives a lot of details about monstrumologist society, and we meet more monstrumologists which is interesting because we’ve only met the one

The characters in this book are amazing. I loved learning about the relationship dynamic between Muriel, John, and Pellinore. we also get a LOT of character building from Warthrop as we delve into his past life, and as his faith in monstrumology is tested.

I liked the themes in this book about being consumed by your passion, whether that’s love, power, or your work.

The horror in this novel is good too. All of the spooky scenes were very well written. Like the last book there is plenty of gore so watch out for that if you’re not a fan, but the scenes were creepy and atmospheric. But it’s not just spooky, its sad spooky.
Spoiler That last scene with John and Will and Pellinore was heartbreaking and scary at the same time

The ONLY criticism I have is that there were one or two “hallucination” scenes that were a little hard to read, but it wasn’t too bad.

Overall, good haunting monster hunter story set in the past.
