Wonderfully written and researched, this is the kind of non-fiction writing that leaves you feeling informed and excited about the subject.

Some very vivid and dark descriptions but a wonderful telling of the revolution of medicine at the hands of Dr. Joseph Lister. I found there was enough detail but not so much it detracted and the story of his life and discoveries was told fluidly and engaging.

I read her other book The Facemaker last year, and loved her ability to tell history in a narrative format and depict the slow advancement in the medical field over time. This title was also great in that regard, and it was fascinating seeing the debate over germ theory and the benefits of antiseptics by well respected medical professional at the time. Some of the descriptions of medical procedures and the severe lack of basic hygiene in the medical field at this time was a bit hard to read, but also very important to make it clear to the reader just how much medicine has changed since 1860. The focus was mainly on Joseph Lister, a surgeon who pushed for the adoption of germ theory and antiseptic methods for surgery. It was another fascinating walk through history and leaves one thankful for individuals who pushed medical knowledge forward in ways that are still felt to this day.
