Read if you enjoy:
💠 strong sibling relationships
💠 slow-burn romance
💠 Norse inspired mythology
💠 awesome side characters (my favorite is the bada** best friend)
💠 dystopian fantasy settings
I’ve had this one for a while and was excited to finally read it! Also, I’ve found that I really enjoy having a physical and e-copy of a book so I can read in whatever format is most convenient/I’m in the mood for. It’s the little things 😂
I was impressed by this debut! It’s a unique mix of dystopian and fantasy with elements of Norse mythology that I haven’t really encountered before. The world is a mix of semi-modern technology (cars, electricity, etc.) and a more typically fantasy setting (castles, monarchy, etc.). Sometimes I forgot the book was set in a more modern time until a truck or a character’s leather jacket was mentioned 😂
Since this is the first book in a fantasy series, I expected more time to be dedicated to world-building/setting up the story, and I’d say that assumption was accurate. The story started a little slow, and I’ll admit it was hard to keep some of the details/names straight at first, but everything soon sped up and started to fall into place—the last third of the book kept me on my toes and ended with a gut-wrenching cliff-hanger, so I’m excited to see that action continue in book two!
The story is told via two POVs and a series of flashbacks, which I really enjoyed. Both POVs felt equally matched and the flashbacks added a lot of depth and character growth—they were probably some of my favorite parts of the whole book. Also, definitely don’t skip the prologue/epilogue on this one and there is a pronunciation guide in the back (I definitely needed it 😆)
I’m excited to continue the series as it comes out and see where this story goes! 🙌🏻

Thank you to Kayla Ann for the Advanced Readers Copy of this book in exchange for an honest review! This book is dual pov, fantasy, and has beautiful illustrations.
I did not know what to expect going into this book and I'm sure all the fantasy readers know that still was not clear until a decent amount of chapters in to this read. However, once it started to pick up it did not stop. This novel was more intense than most thrillers, I was on the edge of my seat wondering when the next paint filled moment would be.
The main character, Larissa is painfully human. There are so many moments where she surprises me with her response but I always completely understand them, if I was in her position I would have the exact same reaction if not worse. She surprises me so much with how loyal and determined she is in protecting her sister, Halla, even at the expense of others and herself. Seeing how much she changes as her whole world flips upside down is raw and beautiful. I cannot wait to see her grow more in the second book and see how she bonds more with the other characters!
I have high expectations for the rest of this series and for what it can be!
