I don’t think this book was for me and my judgment is probably being made harsher by the fact that it broke my streak of 6 or 7 books in a row that I loved. The character interactions were engaging enough to keep me in the story, but I didn’t really connect with them. It’s also just not my type of mystery. I like feeling like I can piece together what’s going on, but reading this book I felt the lack of information known by our main character was meant to be the point rather than his driving motivation. If it had been much longer I may have DNF’d. Someone who reads more contemporary mysteries and novels and who likes the suspense of not knowing which drives this plot will probably enjoy it more than I did.
Moderate: Death and Toxic relationship
Minor: Mental illness

I’ll be 100% blunt, this book was definitely not for me.
I did not enjoy the imagery because I found it difficult to follow. I don’t believe the story followed the synapses on the back of the book, which is the reason I bought it.
This story was supposed to be about a man who ended up wandering into a house that he did not know, but then the people living inside were expecting him.
Then, we get left with this idea that there would be a mystery.
However, I was left wondering what I was reading, why I was reading it, and then getting frustrated that I felt cheated while reading it.
I feel terrible that I’m saying these things, because I know others have really enjoyed this story, but it was not for me. I think the part the upset me the most was there was just…nothing to really read. I was not interested in the characters, I honestly didn’t know who they were in the end.
Just not my book.

I was very up and down with this book, it almost seemed to demand that I take breaks away from it.
It felt as if John was with them for both a moment and a lifetime which certainly speaks to Perry’s ability to weave a narrative to her liking.
I faced much confusion as I moved through this story, and was so satisfied with each answer and explanation I received. These characters are lovable and detestable in their own ways. I guess only you can decide where they fall.

This started off strong and intriguing but really fell apart in the middle. It does feel like she lost her conviction halfway through, and felt she had to make the story something more concrete.
However as always, her prose style is beautiful. One of my favourite currently working writers.
