Full disclosure: I read this book because David Tennent is in the new adaptation.
Rating: 3.5 stars
My first read of 2022. It felt later than normal for me to be completing my first book so late into January (five days) but looking back at myneedlessly detailed yearly reading spreadsheets, I actually finished a book on the same day in 2019, so maybe I'm not as sluggish this year as I thought. (That being said, I was also in a slump at the beginning of 2019, and Book One was accomplished earlier in all other years on record, so...)
But this book. Around the World in Eighty Days. My first Jules Verne novel, actually. The first thing that I thought about after finishing was how much Verne packed into a relatively small book. There was little bloating or unnecessary description, of which there could easily have been, due to the amount of places and locations the novel includes. It really moves along, at a pace I am not used to from classics. For this reason, I think maybe it would be a good introduction to someone wanting to get more into classic literature but is more familiar with modern pacing. Because I can admit, classics... are... mighty... ... ...s...l...o...w.
Ok, well I don't really have much to say about this book. I really fell off at the end of last year when it came to reviews, and I always try to start as I mean to go on. So you get this nonsense instead. Oh well. I sincerely hope no one reads this.

At first I couldn't get into the story. Then after about 60 pages or so it drew me in and I couldn't finish it fast enough. I really liked Jules Verne's descriptions of the events that took place during the adventure. They provided just enough detail to make your own imagination run wild. I had an action packed movie running in my head the whole time. I highly recommend this book.
