I couldn't connect with this story. At all. Brandon fell completely flat for me, and the story, which seemed like it had promise at the start, just didn't go anywhere. Brandon meets Frank, a rough and (apparently) sexy miner, in the backends of Australia where he's been posted as a teacher. When they declared their love (after two rounds of random sex and a weekend in the city), I had to read it twice because I never realized that there was anything more than lust in their relationship.

Brandon as a character never seems to grow, or grow up. After fulfilling his year in tiny Gunnanilla, he heads back to Perth, partying, drinking and drugs. And possibly a job in a record store. What? Apparently this wasn't a learning experience. And the ending left me very dissatisfied, and showcased, I thought, Brandon's immaturity.
