Monogamy is a delightfully slow character study and a meditation on marriage. A quiet read in the best sort of way. It revolves around Graham, a large man in every sense of the word, his first wife Freida, second wife Annie, and children Lucas and Sarah, and the interconnected relationships between them. It’s about how different people can view the same person so differently. It’s about love and acceptance - of yourself as well as others. It’s about grief and how we process it. It’s about perspective and how changing it can alter understanding. It’s about discovering a secret and how it can make you question everything. It’s a book filled with beautiful writing and with small moments perfectly captured. It’s also a book that has me wondering why I hadn’t read anything by Sue Miller before and resolving to dig into her back list as soon as possible.
