The first half of the book was very strong, but then there’s a long portion that drags on without much plot and leads to an oddly anticlimactic ending. But I do think it offers good development for Tom’s character.

My favourite Ripley sequel so far, besides the first book. Tom is back on his latent homosexual shenanigans running around with his mantee in Berlin. And while Frank feels adrift and battles with his own conscience, something Tom can't really grasp and approaches as a silly phase, gay criminal underworld is the MVP of this book.

This is the fourth book in Patricia Highsmith's Ripliad and it's a bit of a turn from the first ones. This time the story mostly follows arch-criminal Tom has he assists a young man who flatters him and is in a whole lot of trouble himself.
The book felt a little rough -- and it doesn't entirely fit in with the other books -- I could never figure out quite why Tom became so absorbed in Billy's blight -- it seemed quite un-Tom-like. The novel moved along easily enough and and was interesting overall, but I'm not sure how it really fit into Tom's progression as a character.

The fourth Thomas Ripley novel is more engrossing, engaging, and also disturbing than the first three. He is sought out by a young man with a guilty conscience who perhaps feels a kinship with Ripley. We end up seeing a different aspect of Ripley, and it is somewhat heartbreaking.

It’s a solid novel, and I liked the more transgressive sections, but there were long stretches where the story gets a little too into the mystery, and this feels like the longest Ripley novel, which it is. Still, a good read.
