A Lion Among Men: Volume Three in the Wicked Years, by Gregory Maguire

Pretty disappointed with this book. It spends so long rehashing old info from Wicked and Son of a Witch. Maguire should have just written a third book in that series and left the Lion out of it. The parts that are about the Lion are depressing failure after failure and makes me wonder why any of it was written.

Granted, it's been quite some time since I read either Wicked or Son of a Witch, and having Son of a Witch in mind is important. I've forgotten most of it, but if you remember almost nothing, the book eventually fills you in on details you need to know. (Somewhat.) Unfortunately, I don't remember a lot about Liir, so that doesn't help. The book starts really slow, to the point where I wasn't sure I'd finish it. After the first third, though, the book picks up a bit. I'm invested enough to want to read the last book in the series.

I can't get into it. I'll try again later. Okay, I'm trying again since I want to read the fourth and final in the series. So far, better than my last attempt.

I found this quite boring. I just hope Out of Oz is better (I'll buy it when it is out in paperback so that all the books match).

Good story, but again, not as great as "Wicked". Overall, though, I really enjoyed the entire Wicked series.

Yackle and Brr's banter was the best. The going was definitely slow, but for some reason, I felt I read this quick and I had a good time. Unfortunately tho, this third book doesn't inspire me to read the fourth one so I'm likely to stop here.

Wonderfully written backstory of the little Lion cub that we all know (and love) as Brr. Worth reading on its own merit, but in order to get a lot of the series self-references it's not recommended.

This series just got worse and worse. Wicked was amazing but by the time you got to this one it's not worth your time.

Sigh. Greatness always felt a couple pages away...
Also, animal sex.

Like Internet Nick with teenage vampire sagas, so do I stubbornly continue through this series despite disappointment. When I first read Wicked 10 years ago - granted during a spell of the flu when the fever was so high I had to blink often to see the words on the page - I was blown away. Interesting characters, hilarious play on well-known cultural icons, politics, dirty sex, it really had it all. This is better than Son of a Witch, which nearly bored me to a sobbing death, but still, Maguire can not create compelling characters. A few times it felt like the story was about to take off, but that consistently remained unfulfilled. The climax of this book was possibly the most forced and lackluster yet. Yes, some questions were answered...but ...eh.

I look forward to exasperatedly reading the next installment.
