I thoroughly enjoyed this graphic novel! The art style was super cool and I loved that it was set in the 80s. I felt really seen by Shannon (which was kind of scary b/c she was an 7th grader) but nevertheless I loved it.

It’s hard to review something autobiographical since it’s based on real life events. I liked some of the cringe-worthy junior high moments in this. I didn’t like all the sexism, but sounds like Hale didn’t either.

Not teaching any more, so I am even more not in the demo, but the arc of this book is probably true for most everyone at some point.

So apparently someone documented my exact 8th grade experience and wrote a book about it

These Shannon Hale/ LeUyen Pham products are gold in my eyes. When you have a graphic novel that is funny and relatable yet is really a memoir....I think you have a winning combination. I also think that books about the trials of middle school (friendship, boys, what makes someone be of "worth) is relevant for so many. Heck, it took ME back to being that age....and all of the trials, the tough times, the feeling so alone.
