Profound.
Winner of the 2022 Printz Award.
I had high hopes for this book because so many other bloggers had read it and rated it highly. When I began the book I was instantly enthralled by the setting and the culture of the characters: The Ojibwa tribe near Sault St. Marie, Minnesota. I had just finished reading [b:Everything You Wanted to Know About Indians But Were Afraid to Ask: Young Readers Edition|54503784|Everything You Wanted to Know About Indians But Were Afraid to Ask Young Readers Edition|Anton Treuer|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1604382910l/54503784._SX50_.jpg|85070285]Everything You Want to Know About Indians But Were Afraid to Ask by Anton Treuer and the book included many of the details he had included about Native cultures. By comparing the two I felt the correctness of the book and its story.
In the beginning I wondered if the book was going to be a YA love story. About the time I was ready to answer "yes" the plot shifted into high gear and the mystery appeared. Who was making and selling meth which was killing off native youth? Every time I'd find the story starting to drag a new plot twist or wrinkle would be introduced and my interest would reignite.
Be sure to read the Author's Note at the end of the story.
