I am fascinated by the WWII era. I am always drawn to books with this period as the backdrop of the story. The atrocities that people can survive amaze me. Lane does a beautiful job of telling the story of 3 ambitious, strong & heroic women who risk their lives to fight with the Resistance against the Germans. While this is a fictional story you know from history that there are so many true stories just like these. And without the bravery of women like Rose, Hazel and Sophia the war would have had a very different ending. Looking forwars to more great books from Soraya.

I thought this book was perfectly fine - but it didn't blow me away.

Told through alternating perspectives; Rose, French born and newly widowed, Sophia, German-French born and wanted by the Nazi's (whom her father is a member of), and Hazel, English born but fluent in French. All these women come together to join the French Resistance in the hopes of helping the Allies win the war against the Germans.

I always like a novel with alternating perspectives, but in this case, it felt like the women were all just a little too similar. I also felt as though I had recently read books like this, and that those books had a better developed storyline - and one that tugged at my heartstrings a little more ([b:The Alice Network|32051912|The Alice Network|Kate Quinn|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1492238040s/32051912.jpg|50492909], [b:The Confidant|13542605|The Confidant|Hélène Grémillon|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1338488716s/13542605.jpg|19106894], [b:Code Name Verity|11925514|Code Name Verity (Code Name Verity, #1)|Elizabeth Wein|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1388161911s/11925514.jpg|16885788], [b:The Nightingale|21853621|The Nightingale|Kristin Hannah|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1451446316s/21853621.jpg|41125521], [b:Letters to the Lost|23014759|Letters to the Lost|Iona Grey|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1410981946s/23014759.jpg|42580877]).

That said - if you enjoy WWII dramas, a little romance, strong female leads, and a little excitement... then you will likely enjoy this book.

Sometimes a book isn't bad, it's just that a reader might have read something a little too similar to be able to rival that reading experience. I think that is precisely my issue with this book.

Thank you Netgalley for the copy in return for an honest review.

I loved this story of three women who fought in the resistance. It was had to read at times but light enough that I could finish it. I have a hard time with too heavy of material. I would consider this a YA historical fiction.
