I wanted to love this but I kept feeling like the author was trying to push a philosophy, but never really was clear on what philosophy, except that it had to do with religion and politics and made me vaguely uncomfortable and a little resentful: in short, manipulated. The story is neat and never boring but, well, Walter Moers it ain't.

Epic!! Animals gain human intelligence/ability and are recruited by ants into a war against humans... an inherently whimsical premise taken seriously in a gritty dystopian future, but without ever losing sight of *love*. Just my speed. Fantastic.

Still uncertain how I feel about how everything culminated, but I enjoyed the journey immensely, loved the world building and plan on reading the sequel.

Talking cats and dogs with guns?! Giant vengeful ants?! Mort(e) is one of the strangest and most enjoyable rides I've been on in a while. It's tempting to call this Animal Farm on speed, as the animals are engaged in revolution. There's even a pig who calls himself Bonaparte because Napoleon was taken. I'm not sure that I would call this a love story, but ultimately Mort(e) is driven by love and an unswerving devotion to his mission: "I just want to find my friend."

Fun sci-fi military story. The sci-fi/worldbuilding elements were much more interesting to me than when the story veered more heavily into the military genre. When it really dug into the weirdness of the premise and didn’t try to be a serious war novel that happened to feature talking bipedal animals and a super-intelligent ant, Mort(e) was a blast.

Interesting concept, boring execution. I'm not sure why the cat searched for so many years for a dog he met just a few times. Also, ridiculous plot with weird religious messages (not sure if they're pro or con).

I got less than one chapter in before deciding this book was not for me. Too…something? Unsettling, I think.

This was a good one. The comparison to Animal Farm is unavoidable, but this is a different story, more a thoughtful exploration of the qualities that make us human, and how they might be different from those in other intelligent species. Interesting read
