For most part, I am formed out of impressions the books I have read have left on me, and Dostoevsky's books are the strongest impressions. So, believe me, when I tell you it is most redundant of his works. It is him at his worst - all the prejudices and problems and social behaviour generalised and sourced to nationality of people (whether people are French, English or Russian); and none of his awesomeness. The observations aren't interesting themselves - they are just used for sub-standard comedy.

A very odd choice. Alma seem to push it as a novel but it's really more of a dramatised diary entry. Dusty pushes it forward with his vignettes and so forth but I suspect it won't be liked by all. Perhaps 2.5.
There is writing to enjoy here and I like certain scenes of his. Slightly troubles me insofar as I am at times reminded of Orwell (D+OIP&L), though Ф.Д. is of course eighty or so years ahead there.
I think what could rescue this is if I could decide on how to read the tone of our dear narrator. Fyodor is difficult to read as an author/persona, insofar as I'm unsure if there is a difference at all. Are we to read it as such? I think it is better enjoyed that way. One for the Dusty completionists I think.

Nu pot spune că țin minte foarte multe din cartea asta, dar pot spune că a fost o lectură incredibil de plăcută și pur și simplu fascinantă. Este efectiv bârfa de la cafeluța de dimineață, doar că în loc să fie Mărioara de la 3 protagonista bârfei, acțiunea se centrează pe o multitudine de personaje, pe diferite nații și pe propriile gânduri și trăiri ale autorului. This book represents an easy slip into Dosto's mind, and I love that for us, readers.

Enjoyed the slight impish glee of runoff sentences, but better in Russian - loses the pervasive 'Russianness' really needed in this translation. Mmm but other than that I respect baby-talking to the bourgeoisie and French respectfully.
